Project summary

Rabies virus (RABV) can travel to the brain unnoticed by suppressing the host immune system. Treatment is only 100% effective within 48 hours after being bitten by a rabid animal. However, there are hardly any insights into this early, critical, phase of infection. In this project we will identify which immune cells are suppressed by RABV and how, by characterizing the complete “genetic fingerprint” of cells present at the virus entry site and at the connected lymph node by single-cell sequencing.

Impact

The obtained insights will allow us to select immunological targets for novel, urgently needed, post-exposure treatments.
