+SPIRAL: integrated interventions to achieve durable HIV control in diverse populations

Project summary

Globally, 38 million people live with HIV, most of them in the sub-Saharan region. A large proportion of these people are on lifelong medication that prevents the virus from spreading through the body. However, the virus can still hide in the body. To research how to cure HIV, the immune system needs to be strengthened and the virus removed in a safe way that eliminates the need for drugs and prevents it from spreading.

In this international project, people living with HIV, scientists, medical specialists from both the Netherlands and South Africa, Zambia and Uganda are working together with pharmaceutical companies to find an effective, acceptable HIV cure for everyone, worldwide.
